Deputy Mayor’s Latest News – June 2024

June Recap

I had a busy June, and my summer vacation came early this year, but I’m back at work now.

📌 Quality of Education and Well-Being of Employees Over Infrastructure

June’s heat coincided with Porin SuomiAreena week, filled with wonderful encounters and discussions, including a panel with Stadin AO, which I had the honor to join. I also participated in a discussion organized by OAJ on ensuring quality early childhood education and training across Finland.

While healthy, safe, and supportive learning environments are necessary, what happens inside those walls is crucial. The quality of education comes from well-being among employees and functional spaces, regardless of their size.

📌 Celebrating Helsinki Day

I celebrated Helsinki Day from the perspective of the Deputy Mayor. The morning started with coffee at the City Hall Event Square with many citizens, enjoying traditional coffee and rhubarb pie. I also visited playgrounds in Eastern Helsinki, where children enjoyed both salmon soup and rhubarb pie for the festive occasion.

In the afternoon, we honored employees with 30 years of service at the City Hall ceremonial hall, followed by a ceremony for the distribution of golden Helsinki medals at the Event Square in the evening. The atmosphere throughout the celebrations was enthusiastic, bright, and future-oriented.

📌 Human Rights for All!

June is Pride Month, and last week we celebrated Helsinki Pride. I’m particularly proud that the Helsinki Mayor’s office was a protector of Helsinki Pride this year, and for the first time, Helsinki also declared Pride peace.

As adults, we set an example for children and youth through our actions. It’s crucial that we do not accept inequality, inappropriate comments, or insults. Children learn from us how to treat others and discuss differing opinions, as well as how to embrace diversity.

The significance of human rights is highlighted during times of uncertainty and various conflicts. During such times, we must remain steadfast and work together to ensure a safe city for all.

♥ All love is valuable. Let’s make Helsinki the capital of love today and every day.
